Last week I gave folks the option to come or not to class, and with those who did come we at first started entering Second Life and found for most that the attention that required was a bit much given everyone's strong reactions to the week. A handful of us ended up at The Common eating, drinking, talking and maybe even bonding a bit.

When the folks attending last week all agreed we would not continue with Second Life that day, and were given the option to just not do Second Life at all this term or reschedule it, they decided to reschedule it for today.

So .... it will help enormously if you will download the Second Life viewer and register before coming to class.

and use button JOIN NOW. You will be directed to choose an avatar. You can further customize this avatar later in-world, both for free and if you want to pay. I will attempt to give each of you $1000L (roughly about $5) to use in SL once we are all "friended" and grouped together in UMD in SL.

Once you have registered you will find your avatar-self at Welcome Island.

Last week I attempted to create a new account myself so I could greet folks there, however it turns out the decisions for protecting newbies means that you are randomly included with others also new so that the chances of anyone taking advantage of you is as low as possible.

So, you might as well go through all the exercises at Welcome Island at your own pace.

YOU CAN DO THIS OUTSIDE CLASS OR IN CLASS sitting next to the rest of us and seeing what is what.

At the end of the Welcome Island exercises you are directed to Social Island. From there you can go anywhere, make friends with me "Katie Fenstalker"and others from our class, join our group "UMD at SL" and rendezvous with all of us at Caledon Oxbridge where some folks are waiting to show us around.

Remember that although we all look pretty cartoon-like in SL, avatars have (mostly) real people with real feelings attached to them. (There are some bots around too admittedly.)

ALTHOUGH SL IS NOT A (traditional?) GAME, there are games to play there if you want, and lots of playful activities to engage. (or some say: "Second Life is best described as an open-ended, user-created online social game.")

There is a learning curve for various possibilities in SL and as with all games, you may be operating at the edge between frustration and fun, moving between these, and enjoying it up to a point, then turning off. That is normal for any avatar driven experience on a screen AND WHY WE ARE DOING THIS IN OUR MAKING CLASS: to experience ourselves hooking into and among screens and infrastructures, the point of this part of the course.

Let's talk about this learning curve and experiences in class today! Pay attention to how all of it feels, and be curious about that, definitely not blaming yourself for anything, and also noting when you want to blame SOMETHING for it! :)

--your circuit scribe kits!
--fun writing implements: colored pencils, markers, etc. I will provide sharpies, glue sticks, and scissors so don’t worry about those.  
--collage materials, old magazines, images, photocopies: anything you feel comfortable cutting up!

BEFORE CLASS: 

Writing/Sketching/Thinking Prompt: Before you come to class on Thursday, please journal, draw/sketch, make a bulleted list (or some combo of these) about your utopian (or dystopian) version of the maker movement. What are your (our) dreams for what “making” can mean? What kinds of “making” do we want to make space for in our world—what do we want “making” to look like? What do we want “making” to be used for—what kinds of work can/should it do in the world? What and whose labor is needed to make this happen? These can be existing or imaginary utopias/dystopias/heterotopias. It can be short, typed, handwritten, whatever you want but it just needs to fit on 1 page. There is no wrong way to do this!

Please bring this with you to class:

Zines (short for ‘magazines’ or ‘fanzines’) are independently produced and distributed publications; they are textual, visual, and material forms of cultural production. In today’s mini-zine workshop we think with and through zines as material manifestos/manifestations of feminist, queer, anti-racist maker movements. How have anti-racist and queer feminists used zines to generate theory from everyday life and to articulate utopian/dystopian versions of the world? How might we use zines to imagine and create our own visions of maker movements?

Again it took until this morning to finalize what we are doing today. Thanks to Anne we will be experiencing TOMATO SAUCE in storytelling details and reflection! She will bring spaghetti and I will bring spirialized zucchini as canvases upon which to appreciate her creation!

NO CLASS NEXT WEEK! Use the time to work on projects, do any catching up necessary, and to MEET WITH CLASS PARTNERS! THINK PROJECTS! be sure you have EVERYONE'S CONTACT INFO! We meet at 0100 Marie Mount, the Maryland Room, for the next three weeks, for our FOOD layer of the course!

For the coming three weeks we move onto our FOOD layer of the class. We will be meeting at The Maryland Room (downstairs) at Marie Mount Hall, which is the building next door to Woods Hall and Women's Studies on the Mall.



The building is a bit of a Maze, so it is best if you enter NOT ON SIDE WITH ARROW ABOVE, but rather on the opposite side close to the Chapel. Go in the doors and to the left and down at the bottom of the stairs is The Maryland Room. Two entrances, one from stairs, one from basement floor if you find yourself there.



We will discuss what we shall do Making-wise in the next 3 weeks. It will involve making food, eating it, preparing it, sharing it. Bring food. Bring feelings about food. Bring knowledges about making food. What issues does food raise for you? personally, in terms of social justice, in ways that affect your life, in forms that worry you, in things you like and don't like and why, and when you know and when you don't! What stories about food do you have? does your family have? how does this matter in Women's Studies: guessing is good!

Who was Marie Mount? What is the history of Marie Mount Hall at UMD?

"The hall was originally an addition to Silvester Hall and was called the Home Economics Bldg. In 1947, the addition was renovated. It was first named Margaret Brent Hall in 1959. "...What's driving these differences? A separate analysis by the NEA has some answers. Education is a big part of it. The percent of state residents with a bachelor's degree or higher is positively correlated with creating artwork: in other words, more education, more art.

"This relationship is even stronger in some of the other categories the NEA looked at, such as attendance at art exhibits or performing arts events.

"Conversely, poverty rates are a strong negative driver of arts participation. If you're working three minimum wage jobs, you're probably not going to have a lot of time to indulge in crochet or creative writing.

"Of course, education and poverty are big drivers of each other, too. States with more money can spend more on better education, which leads to higher wages, which leads to more education, in an ongoing virtuous cycle. Unfortunately, the reverse holds true as well.

"Rates of participation in the arts are a powerful and under-appreciated proxy for human well-being. "Self-actualization," including creative activities, are all the way at the top of Maslow's famous hierarchy of needs. If you're able to spend the time and resources necessary to, say, practice with the local theater group or join the local community band, it's highly likely that you've got all the basics like food, shelter and safety taken care of.

"The NEA numbers suggest that a lot of folks in Southern states are falling behind their Northern counterparts on some of those measures. This mirrors what researchers see in other domains too, such as child well-being...."
